A little taste of New Orleans

I certainly didn’t get to see much of New Orleans but Saturday night, after a long day of presentations, we walked to a restaurant seven blocks away, which gave me a chance to see at least a little bit of the city.

Upon arrival we were taken to a casual seating area for drinks. The decor was bizarre to say the least. Lots of red lights illuminating red furniture and wall hangings.

The seating area was great and the service was spectacular. The only downside was that we weren’t sitting down to dinner until about 9pm.

The menu was a little limited – I’m guessing just because we were a very large party with special accommodations. I had no problem whatsoever deciding between the fish and the filet mignon.

First up was a jumbo lump crab cake that was out of this world.

The vanilla bean creme brûlée was a great way to conclude the dinner, though sadly I was too full to finish the entire thing.

I was a little bummed when I saw the filet was topped with mushrooms – mom would have loved it. They scraped off just fine and the remaining gravy had a good, non-mushroomy flavor to it.

On the way back, I hopped two blocks over and walked back on Bourbon Street. The stink was horrible and after just two blocks, I cut back over to get off the street. This was the quietest section of the street. The rest was pretty much a freak show that I think you’d have to be drunk to enjoy. All in all, I don’t really have any desire to come back. The heat and humidity were out of this world and while I’m sure there are some beautiful things to see, it’s just not my cup of tea.
