On top of the Santa Monica Mountains

It’s been a while since we ventured more than 15 minutes from home for a hike, but since we had a three-day weekend, we headed into the Santa Monica Mountains to hike Circle X Ranch. In about three hours we managed to hit Balanced Rock, Split Rock, Tri-Peaks, Inspiration Point and Sandstone Peak. Unfortunately we didn’t see much sunshine and temperatures were much cooler than we anticipated. I spent the entire time in a long-sleeve shirt and a light jacket.

Buddy held up pretty well. He was crying like a little girl before we made it back to the car and since getting home, he’s been ‘out cold’ like someone knocked him over the head with a frying pan. Otherwise, he was a trooper, scaling boulders three times his height in a single bound.

The views really are amazing though. Sandstone Peak is the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains – though at 3,111 feet, you’re not exactly running into oxygen deprivation.
