Sunday’s ‘epic’ ride

Just a few years ago, Donna and I wouldn’t have dared to describe a ride as ‘epic’ unless it broke the 50-mile barrier (off-road) and required more than five hours in the saddle. Well, guess what? Times change.

Looking back

Since the last time we rode today’s route, Donna has beaten cancer and I have, well, spent a lot of time on the sofa. Knowing we don’t have the legs that we did three years ago, the ride was a daunting proposal.

The hills are(n't) alive

Today’s route came in at just under 30 miles, required four hours in the saddle and absolutely fried my legs. To add insult to injury, the 2,600 feet of elevation gain felt more like 4,600 feet.

Parched landscape

I was planning to justify a few extra breaks by breaking out the camera more often, but as much as we like Sulphur Mtn Road, it isn’t very photogenic. And leave it to me to snap the few pix that I did, during the flattest sections of the climb.

Climbing Sulphur Mtn. Road

Despite the physical discomfort, I couldn’t have asked for a better day. The weather was absolutely perfect, the bikes road beautifully and being outdoors with Donna and Phi made for great company and surroundings.
