SOLVANG AND BACK

After a few days of rain, the weather cleared up nicely for a four-day weekend, which included MLK Day. Lodging rates were unusually low so we decided to head to Santa Barbara, Lake Cachuma and Nojoqui Falls with an overnight stay in Solvang.

Our first stop was at a roadside vista point that offered an amazing view, high above Santa Barbara. A short path lead to a less-impressive view.

It was sad to see the low lake levels at Cachuma. I was absolutely floored. Anyone who thinks the recent rain has ended Southern California’s drought is out of their mind. Camping sites that were once lakeside now simply offer views of the distant lake. And the boat ramp stops about 80 yards shy of the actual lake.

While mom and dad relaxed at a picnic table, Donna and I ventured out on a short hike. I’m sure the trail once offered beautiful lakeside scenery, but now, much like the campsites, only offers view of the distant lake.

After some time at the ‘lake,’ it was off to Solvang where we got checked into our hotel, then headed out again to check out Nojoqui Falls. Along the way a pasture and magnificent sky caught my attention.

The walk to Nojoqui Falls isn’t far, but it does gain some elevation. Despite their recent ailments, mom and dad completed the entire journey.
