As of 6 a.m., the latest weather forecasts called for periods of rain, sunshine, heavy winds, and fog. In short, heading to Grayson Highlands Friday morning was a real gamble. As we pulled into the park, the first scenic overlook (above) offered a spectacular view, but we weren’t more than an hour into the hike before it began to rain. We had packed rain gear and didn’t think much of it, until the winds picked up and it began raining sideways. At that point, I was ready to call it quits, but Donna talked me into sticking it out. We pushed on and spent the bulk of our time hiking through the clouds (fog) until eventually, the weather cleared a bit. By then we had already abandoned the scenic overlooks and were on our way back to the car, though we did still manage to catch a few scenic views.
